DIFFERENT

Beth and Jasmine Thomson are sisters, but they're very different. Beth is albino and sometimes people are cruel to her but she always tries to be positive...
Beth is pale-skinned and has got long white hair and white eyebrows. In contrast, her sister Jasmine is dark-haired and has darker skin.

While they are walking, some people look at Beth and make comments like “Look, she is a ghost”. Beth tries to be positive. She says they are just curious about her.

Beth is one of the 3.000 albinos in Britain. A genetic condition causes albino skin to be very pale and sensitive. They usually have problems with their eyes.

But Beth is happy now. “I was incredibly shy and sensitive when I was younger but now I'm friendly and I speak to people”
People are often intolerant, they don't like different people but this makes me more determined to be strong and show them that I'm not really different. It's only my appearance.

Adapted from English Plus.OUP

Notebook:
1. Describe Beth and Jasmine. (Physically and personality)
2. What comments do people do about Beth?
3. What physical problems do albinos have?
4. Was Beth different when she was younger? Why?

5. Describe your best friend. What does he/she look like? What about his/her personality?
